General course information and objectives

Activities and assignments in this class will be related to your Linguistics course
Purposes of Applied English:
- To help you with the special English you need to succeed in Linguistics and improve your general English skills
This English course is not "tutoring" for your elective course.
- If you have questions about the content or assignments in Linguistics, please contact Professor Fujiwara. There is also a class tutor for Linguistics: Nick Kummert.

Office hours: by appointment -- and I will often be in my office after Professor Fujiwara's class and at 2:45 when you finish classes each day.

Grades

You will receive grades on: quizzes and a few assignments. There is no mid-term or final.
There is no make-up of quizzes unless you contact me BEFORE class and have an exciting story.
At the end of the semester, if you are between two grades, you will get the higher grade if you tried hard to do your best, had a good "attitude", went to tutoring, and participated actively in class.
Your grade will be lowered if you miss > 10% of the classes. You will fail if you miss > 20%. Three tardies = 1 absence.

Expectations

On-time attendance and active participation in class
- Bring a dictionary, your Linguistics book, notes, handouts, etc. to all Applied English classes.
- If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to understand what we did, get handouts, etc.
Use of English in class
Daily preparation and study
Independent work: No copying of other students' work
Drink beverages in class only in hard, washable mugs. No food and no gum please.
Come to class rested and groomed.
