For Wednesday, prepare notes for an in-class discussion. I would suggest that you ask Willamette students and do some research so you are prepared. I will collect your notes. You do not need to use complete sentences, but I should be able to understand what you write. Think hard. Fill the space :-)

1. What do you think "sustainable farming" or "sustainable agriculture" is? In other words, what would a farmer do to make a farm "sustainable"? Think of at least five or six things! Don't be afraid to guess.

2. "Eating locally" is now a popular movement in the U.S. How much of the food you eat at home in Japan is produced in Japan? How much is produced within 100 miles of your home? What are the ecological and social advantages of eating foods that are produced locally (within about 50 - 100 miles of your home).

3. Why has food consumption and food waste increased so much in the the U.S. in the last 50 years? Most American are overweight, and 15% to 20% of all waste in the U.S. is food waste. (The same thing is now beginning to happen in Japan and other countries, so it's important that we understand.)
