READ and UNDERSTAND THIS BEFORE WEDNESDAY
Green businesses
Kettle Foods
Many businesses are going "green" or pretending to go "green".
Why: for financial, environmental, and social reasons
- To save money (reduce energy costs)
- To attract customers
- To attract business and trading partners
- Because "it's the right" think to do (for moral/ethical reasons: because it correct and right)
- To protect the environment
- To protect the public
- To protect employees
- To reduce legal liability from use of chemicals and other dangerous materials
"Green washing"
- When a business pretends to be "green", but really isn't, we call this "green washing", which means to paint something green.
- Sometimes "green washing" involves doing something that sounds good, but doesn't make much difference. An example of "green washing" is a big oil company telling the public they use recycled paper. That good, but it doesn't make a big difference in the companies total energy use or emissions. Another example, is telling the public they give "some of the profits" to environmental organization when the percent may be .00000008%.
Kettle Foods
Kettle Foods has it's home in Salem. We'll visit there Wednesday. They have a wetland, solar panels, and biodiesel cars. Here's an article about their new plant in the state of Wisconsin.
