American Studies C: Sustainability & Applied English

Syllabus -- Fall 2007

Course description

  • American Studies-C: Sustainability
  • Applied English for American Studies-C: Sustainability
  • The goal of all American Studies courses at TIUA is to study American culture and society through "an analysis of traditional and contemporary American values, social institutions, and means of expression".
  • In this particular American Studies course, we will learn how American beliefs, values and behaviors influence the future of the U.S., of Japan, and of the world. The concept of “sustainability” will be examined throughout the course. Sustainability is the idea of “meeting current needs without jeopardizing the future”. This is a new course at TIUA.
  • Applied English will help students with the English needed to learn about Sustainability and will improve students' general English.
  • Students will learn through interviews, readings, lectures, guest speakers, field trips, a final project, and an activity with Willamette Students.

This course is not intended to offer only one viewpoint or pressure students into thinking one way or another. On the other hand, general scientific opinion will be honored and, in the interest of clarity and time, minority viewpoints will not always be presented.
