I am a geobiologist and biogeochemist. I am particularly drawn to questions regarding the conditions that lead to ocean euxinia (anoxic and sulfidic conditions), the microbial communities that thrive in euxinic environments, and the impact of euxinia on evolution of marine animals. I use numerical modeling, isotope geochemistry, field geology, and organic geochemistry to explore the biogeochemical history of euxinic environments. Much of my work has focused on the links between euxinia and mass extinction, using the end-Permian mass extinction as a case study.
