50% off!  Willamette sells discounted passes for the Salem Area Transit District's Cherriots buses to students, faculty, and staff - you can buy them at campus safety, both monthly passes and eleven-ride punch-card passes.

When? Salem buses, or Cherriots, run weekdays from about 6:15 a.m. to 7:15 p.m., and as late as 9 p.m. on some routes.   No service on weekends or holidays.  Cherriots has extensive web pages with: schedules and individual route maps and a system map.  Buses run either every half-hour or hour depending on the route and time-of-day.

Where? The best place to catch the bus is at the Courthouse Square transit station, three blocks west of campus in the block surrounded by High street, Church street, Court and Chemeketa streets.  It's about an eight-minute walk at a moderate pace from Collins Hall - five minutes if you walk fast. Here's a map showing the walk, with the transit station marked with a red star.  Where does it go?  All over Salem. Here's the system map or individual route maps.

But it's a long walk from the stop to my destination. Two thoughts there:
First, walks of about a mile are pretty quick and fairly painless - and taking such a walk twice a day can do wonders for your health and weight.  Americans are the most sedentary people on the face of the earth - go to any other country and it's apparent.  Does the rest of the world know something we don't?
Second, all Salem buses have bike-racks on the front bumper.  You can put your bike on the bus, then ride quickly from the stop to your destination.  There's no special pass or fee required.

More Information: Cherriots web page is full of everthing you might want to know. Remember, Willamette folk can get passes at 50% off at campus safety.
