L5
Kanji Review:
日本人 日本人の学生 山川さんは 日本人ですね
田中先生は いい先生です 山田さんの本は 小さい本です
大きい本 大きい本は つくえの上に あります
上田さんのアパートは とても あかるい です
山の下に 川があります 山中さん 中川さん
学生かいかんの中に カフェがありますか
Grammar I:
この___、その___、あの___どの___
Adds to our KO, SO, A, DO List
[We had already これ、それ、あれ、and どれ, and then
ここ、そこ、あそこ and どこ]
But these こん、その、あの words are different; they must be followed by a Noun so you are saying
This___, or That___ e.g.
この本、その山、あの川, その人、あの学生、その先生
Other demonstratives like これ=already contain a Noun so it can be used on its own and means
"This thing" これは___です。
That's why we can never say
これ本、それ山 or あれ学校
And remember, これ、それ、あれ、どれ cannot be used for people so it will always be:
この人、その人、あの人
Likewise, ここ、そこ、あそこ、どこ= are about places; they already mean "this place, that place" as they are so we could NEVER have something like:
ここ カフェ, そこ川 or あそこ デパート
But rather it would be そのカフェ or その川
or あのデパート
So,"this room" = この へや
"that picture" = その え
"that photograph" = その しゃしん
"that car over there" = あの くるま
BTW, It seems that これ、それ、あれ、and
この_Noun_その_Noun、あの_Noun stentences are likely to be です type sentences
これは あかいペン です;それは 大きい うち です
その学生は アメリカ人です(アメリカ人 だ とおもいます)
この先生 は いい先生です (いい先生 だ とおもいます)
which means that it is mostly the location words in the Ko, So, A, Do family that may involve a verb of location/existence, あります/います
そこに ぎんこうが あります
ここに あおい ペンがあります
But you could also have a です pattern with these words like ここ、そこ、あそこ such as:
そこは いい ところです = That is a good place.
ここは ひろい きょうしつ ですね =
This is a big classroom
あそこは ラムパブです =
That Place over there is the Ram Pub
So all these utterances are saying something about a place: This/That place is a good place.....
Grammar II: LOCATION NOUNS, i.e.,
Words like inside, outside, next to, on top of, underneath, nearby, in front of, in back of (behind), etc.
中、inside
そと、outside
まど の そと に = outside the window
き が ありま
上、on top of つくえ の 上に
下、underneath いすの 下に
となり next to (same type)
よこ next to (different type of objects)
ちかく close, nearby
まえ in front of
うしろ behind
みぎ = the right side of
ひだり = the left side of
Two things to note:
1. We see に and あります used in these patterns to locate things in space, utilizing the structure we learned in L.4: Loc に Thing が あります, e.g.,
Before, all we could say in response to a question like
「ぎんこう は どこに ありますか」 was
ここ/そこ/あそこに (+ Thing) が あります
But now we can add in our new LOCATION NOUNS like:
学生かいかん の 中に あります OR
学生かいかん の 中に ぎんこう が あります = Inside the UC, there is a bank
Other Examples:
へや の 中 に コンピュータ が あります
つくえ の 上 に じしょ が あります
まどの そと に 大きい き が あります
まどの まえ に あかい じしょ が あります
2. The word order in Japanese is the complete opposite of English.
When we say, "On top of the chair," we start with
Where it is, the Location:
"On top of..."
But in Japanese, we do NOT start with the Locating Word, but with WHAT it is in ON, UNDER, IN, etc.,
That means we start with "chair." いす
いすの上に
So, we start with that "something," that the object you want to locate is on top of
and then we add the の 上 に.
For example, to say "On top of the chair,"
you must start with chair or いす and then add
の上 に to it
in order to say “on top of the chair” =
いすの 上に, e.g.
いすの 上に X が あります, e.g.
いすの 上に カメラ/オレンジ/あかいペン/けしゴム
if it's "On top of the Table," we start with テーブル
テーブルの 上 に きょうかしょ が あります
テーブルの 上 に ざっし/ ペン/ とけい/ かばん
Desk = つくえ:
つくえ の 上 に、コンピュータが あります
Inside(中):
Thing の 中 に or なか = Inside =
うちの 中 に = inside the house; or
学生かいかん の 中 に = inside the UC
おしいれ の 中 に ふとんが あります=
Inside the closet, there are futons
Outside (そと):
Thing の そと = outside the window =
まどの そとに、or
へや の そと に = Outside the room;
きょうしつ の そと に = outside the classroom
Next to: Two Ways となり and よこ
Thing の となり = next to (same category)
ぎんこう の となり に コンビニが あります
Thing の よこ = next to, different type of object
たてもの の よこに、くるまが あります
Nearby or Close to ちかく:
Thing の ちかく に = close to, nearby
大学の ちかく に びょういんが あります
Behind うしろ:
Thing の うしろ = behind X-さんの うしろに Y-さんが います
In front of まえ:
Thing の まえ = in front of
えきの まえ に、こくばんの まえに
On top of:
Thing の 上 = on top of the sofa ソファの 上 に
Underneath:
Thing の 下 = underneath the desk = つくえの 下に
To the Right of:
Thing の みぎ = right (side of)the bank =
ぎんこうの みぎ(がわ)に
To the Left of
Thing の ひだり = left (side of) of the library =
としょかん のひだり に
Of course, we CAN replace the に あります with です for short
ビストロ は どこ に ありますか。
学生かいかん の 中です。
NOTE: You can also use expressions like "Underneath the chair" to modify a noun that follows it connected by a の:
いすの 下 の ねこ = The cat underneath the chair.
We don't say in English "The underneath-the-chair CAT" but we CAN in Japanese.
So how might we finish such a sentence?
いすの 下の ねこ は 先生の ねこ です。or
いすの下のねこ は 大きいねこですね。
つくえの上の コンピュータは あたらしい[コンピュータ]です
まど の そと の き は 大きい ですね/きれいですね。
大学 の ちかく の レストラン は あまり 高くない です
Xさんの うしろ の 学生 は Yさん です
Or we could say with a Motion Verb:
となり の へやに 行きます =
I'll go to the room next door.
ぎんこう の となりの 本や に 行きます =
I'll go to the bookstore next to the bank
How do we ASK about where things are?
We can recall the TWO Patterns from L. 4:
1. In Some Location に なにが ありますか =
What is there...is some location like,
on top of the chair, under the bed, etc.
いすの 上 に 何 が ありますか
いすの 下 に 何 が ありますか
Under the chair = いすの下
2. Or, we can start with the Thing, the Object we are seeking information about:
Where is X = X は どこに ありますか
ざっしは どこに ありますか
でんわは どこに ありますか
オレンジは どこに ありますか
Grammar III: 「の」 Substituting for a Noun that was just mentioned
Following an Adjective modifier it becomes like "one" in English
い-Adjective + の = あかいの
= the red one
くろい ペン は 田中さん の です = The black pen is Tanaka san's.
あかい の は、私の です。 = the Red ONE is mine.
But, with a な Adjective + の, we must retain the な because the の is now a Noun so like any noun, it must be preceded by な.
きれい な の は = the pretty one
しずか な の は = the quiet one
りっぱ な の は = the splendid one
ゆうめい な の は = the famous one
For 2 Nouns, Noun + Noun = we use の to connect as usual.
スミスさん の かばんは...Smith-sn's kaban
でも アリスさん の は... But Alice-san's...
The 「の」 particle in this usage essentially replaces the noun and takes over the role of a noun itself. It can be called an indefinite pronoun
あおい の は スミスさん の です...
= the blue ONE is Smith-san's.
See Activity 1 p. 189 using だれの = "Whose?"
The selected item は だれの ですか e.g
The Red cell phone is whose? It's Chin-san's.
Well, how about the blue ONE?
あおい の は?
The Blue ONE is Kim-san's cellphone
あおい のは (the Blue One) キムさん の (けいたい) です
Some More Practice:
小さい くるまは 私のです。 大きいの ____________.
くらい/あかるいの は (へや)
新しい/古い の は (かばん、コンピュータ、カフェ)
せまい/ひろいの は (きょうしつ、へや、おしいれ)
くろい/しろいの は (コート、シャーツ、ノート)
古いい/りっぱな (たてもの:ゆうびんきょく、ぎんこう)
(くるま)
あかい/あおい (ペン、じてんしゃ、くるま、かばん)
高い/高くない (家)
古い/しずかな (りょう)
大きい/ゆうめいな (大学)
Grammar IV: A からBまで
きょうは 何よう日 ですか
いい 週末 でしたか?
何か しましたか?
何を しましたか?
1. Quick Review I Location Nouns:
上、下
中、そと
まえ、うしろ
となり、よこ
みぎ、ひだり
ちかくに
See Nakama p. 186:
Student A draws in the picture Objects like まど、ドア、山、川, etc. (see list 1-9) not allowing Student B to see the drawing, then Student B asks about items 1-9 まどは どこ に ありますか
Based on the response from Student A draws them in then you can compare the drawings!!
2. Quick Review II の as Noun Substitute:
The red one あかい の は
The narrow/cramped one
The old one
The big one
The bright one
The dark one
The blue one
The yellow one
The tall/expensive one
The wide/spacious one
The quiet one
The new one
The pretty one
The splendid one (りっぱ)
3. New Grammar Point IV: Starting Points and Ending Points in both TIME and SPACE
A から B まで from Point A to Point B
へや から 学生かいかん まで 行きました。
I went from....
キャンパスからレストランまで バスで 行きました。
I went from...to....BY.....
The で indicates the means by which you went (car, bus, train, bike, walking, etc.);
If you want to ask about HOW people got from A to B you say....
何 で 行きましたか =
By what means did you go?
How did you get there?
NOTE: We can't use で when we are going "By foot," because we use the verb "Walk" あるきます in its -て Form = あるいて
We we will learn the -て Form of both Verbs and Adjectives in L. 6 but we already saw -て Forms way back in L. 1 when we learned polite requests with -て 下さい like
聞いて下さい = please listen
見て下さい = please look
書いて下さい= please write
読んで下さい = please read etc.
いって下さい = please say it (p. 20)
Another Question: How Long does it take?
どのくらい かかりますか = How Long does it take?
かかりますか = it takes
セーラム から ポートランドまで くるま で
どのくらい かかりますか
Note: When we talk about "Duration," i.e., Elapsed Time, we have to add the word かん
(間)to the Time Phrase
一時= 1:00 ーーー> 一時間 = 1 hour long
二時= 2:00 ーーー> 二時間 = 2 hours long
三時 = 3:00 ーーー> 三時間 = 3 hours long, etc.
When it involves a half hour, e.g. 1.5, 2.5, or 3.5 hours long, the はん(半) for half, comes AFTER the 間 so we get
一時間半 for 1.5 hours long/duration
BTW, in place of
どのくらい かかりますか = How Long does it take?
we can also ask:
何時間 くらい かかりますか? =
About how many hours (long) does it take?When we say it takes so many X 時間 ぐらい かかります we are saying
"It takes about or around (approximately) X hours...
When we are taking about Minutes (分) we don't add the 間 to signify an interval of time at all
30分 ぐらい かかります
= it takes around 30 minutes
Practice:
セーラムから ユージーン まで バスで
イートン•ホールから 学生かいかんまで あるいて** See NOTE above
ポートランドからシアトルまで でんしゃで
大学から ランカスター•モール まで くるまで
キャンパスから ブシュこうえんまで あるいて
キャンパスから セーラム•センターまで じてんしゃで
ここから 大学のアパート(U Apps)まで あるいて
How long does it take to walk from 学生かいかん to Olin Hall?
From Goudy to Matthews Hall?
From Campus to hospital?
From campus to StaBa?
From Campus to the Ram Pub?
From Campus to Bush Park?
How long by car from Salem to San Francisco?
How long by car from Salem to Corvallis?
How long on foot from Walton Hall to Kaneko Hall?
We can use this pattern for TIMES as well.
Today from Time A to Time B I will.....
10:00 to 11:00 am
11:00 am to 12:00 pm
1:00 to 3:00 pm
2:00 to 4:00 pm
4:00 to 6:00 pm
6:00-8:00 pm
8:00-10:00 pm
Yesterday from (past)
10:00 am to 11:00am--ate breakfast
On Friday, 12:50 pm to 2:20 -- had class
2:30-4:00 read a book at the library
4:00-5:30--read email (メール)
5:30 to 6:00 pm--ate dinner at Goudy
7:00-8:00 pm had a meeting (ありました
Grammar V p. 193: は and も =
Topic Marker は and Similarity Marker も
も Replaces or Goes where the は appeared
私 は 学生 です
上田さん も 学生 です
今日 びょういん に 行きます
あした も いきます (Note: Place is not mentioned so we are just going with きょう and あした followed by も)
But if we want to talk about wherew we are going, or when we are doing something, i.e., the Time or Destination TO which we are going using particles like に, から and で, then we cannot omit them--they provide us important information like destination (to), location (at), from, and by means of--so we wind up with DOUBLE PARTICLES in our sentences:
としょかん で べんきょうします
(I study at the Library)
へや で + も べんきょうします
(I also study in my room, as well,で+も)
PLACE A に 行きます (I go to Place A)
PLACE B に + も 行きます (I go to Place B, too)
OR
PLACE A に あります/います (It is in Place A)
PLACE B に + も あります/います
(It's also in Place B), e.g.
いすの下 に ねこが います
(Underneath the chair, there is a Cat)
いすの上にも います
(There is also one on Top of the Chair)
先生 から でんわが ありました
(I had a phone call from Sensei. Uh, oh.)
友だち から + も ありました
(I also had one from my friend. Yay!)
See Activity 2, p. 196:
I do A. あさごはんを 食べます
I also do B (も). ばんごはんも 食べます
But (でも) I don't do C.
でも ひるごはん は 食べません
1. A bus came at 10:00
One also came at___
But at ____ one did not come
2. Exchange students come from Japan
They also come from___
But not very many come from____
3. I go by bus. I also go by___.
But I don't go by____
4.Yesterday I took a bath.
The day before yesterday I also....
But____I will/not.....
5. Last night I took a shower
は v. が
Note always use が when the subject IS or contains a Question word like
どの___、どこ、どれ、だれ, なに, どんな___e.g.
何 が いい ですか?
どの人 が スミスさん ですか
だれ が いますか
どこが いい ですか
どの たてもの が 学生かいかん ですか
どれ が ジェームズさん の コンピュータ ですか
どのコンピュータ が ジェームズさん の ですか
どんな くるま が いい ですか = 本田? とよた?
What kind of car is good/Do you like? Honda? Toyota?
Remember L. 4 p. 149 Activity 2?
What kind of house do you like =
どんな 家 が いい ですか
See Activity 1 p. 196
だれが 学生 ですか = Who is a student?
Note, full disclosure, these sentences can be restructured so the QUES WORD is NOT in the beginning of the sentence, for example:
学生は だれですか v だれが 学生 ですか
びょういんは どれ ですか v どれが びょういん ですか
Activity 2
I do A.
I also do B (も).
But (でも) I don't do C.
Also, use が when the information is important to Speaker and/or New to Listener
Activity 3 Restating Sentences creating a Topic with a は, e.g.
When do you drink Coffee?
いつ コーヒーを 飲みますか
Coffee? コーヒーですか?
コーヒーは, あさ 飲みます、ね
As for Coffee (は), I drink it in the morning, right?
L6
Grammar I has Two Parts
First Part: Use of Particles と and に
A. と can mean "with, together with"
友だち と べんきょう しました
田中さん と えいが を 見ました
We also have a new Adverb in L. 6,
いっしょに which means "together with," so
友だち と いっしょに コーヒーを 飲みました
I drank coffee with my friend
Also,
B. と can be used to link any two Nouns:
ペン と 本
学生 と 先生
コンピュータ と でんわ
日本ご の 本 と 中ごくご の 本
But we CANNOT use と to link Two Actions/Verbs
べんきょうしました と 寝ました NOoooo!
That is where verbs in the て form come in -- which we will study in Grammar IV (234-36) -- so we will say
べんきょうして、 寝ました;
としょかんに 行って、本を読みました
買いもの に 行って、コンサートへ 行きました
= which means
"I went shopping and then to a Concert."
First Part of Grammar I:
Reviews the uses of に that we have learned so far:
1. Fixing an event or action in time
1:00 に 行きました = I went AT 1:00
土曜日 に 帰ります = I will return ON Saturday
So に has slightly different English equivalents depending on context: on, at, in, etc.
2. Indicating the Goal or Destination of Movement
学校 に 行きます
うち に 帰ります
Here, of course, へ is an alternative particle that can be used in place of に.
3. Locating Something (in Space)
Some Loc に Some Thing が あります
このへんに ぎんごうが あります
あそこに ビストロ が あります
ビストロは 学生かいかん の 中に あります
BTW, these sentences tend to be "There is" sentences as opposed to just an IS sentence.
The room IS spacious = へやは ひろい です
But
"There is a spacious room over there" would be:
あそこ に ひろい へや が あります
Some students still struggle a bit with where and when to place the に and the が.
It's pretty simple:
The が goes with the Thing we are Locating and the に goes with the Place where we are Locating it.
In Some Loc に Some Thing が あります
この へん に ぎんこう が あります
つくえの 上 に コンピュータ が あります
キャンパス に 学食 が あります
So the Word order goes:
Loc に Some thing が あります
BUT, we don't always need both elements in every utterance, right? Especially if you are asked where something is Located:
X は どこ に ありますか
You just put your answer with the Location, and put it right where the どこ was in the question and that's your answer.
You do not have to re-mention the thing we are talking about!!
Q.: 学食 は どこ に ありますか
A.: 学生かいかん の ちかく に あります
So, we don't have to repeat 学食
For an English Sentence like
"The student union is near/close to Goudy" we should write:
学生会かん は ガウディ の ちかく に あります
学生会かん は ガウディ の ちかく です
(but NEVER に です)
Second Part of Grammar I (The New Part):
4. Now, we are adding a new wrinkle:
Using the Verb Stem + に + a Motion Verb
to indicate the Purpose of or the Reason for the Motion
= it is like "I go/went in order to...."
ひるごはんを 食べ に レストラン へ 行きました
I went to the restaurant IN ORDER TO eat dinner
食べ に =
the Verb stem of 食べます+ the particle に + a Motion Verb
3 Main Ones Motion Verbs =
Go, Come, Return --
行きます、来ます、帰ります
およぎに 行きます = I'll go in order to swim
友だちと 会いに 来ます = I'll come to meet a friend ばんごはを 作りに アパートに 帰りました
See more about this here: Purpose
Past of い and な Adjectives

先週の週末は どうでしたか。
Try some responses using Past (かった)form of:
いい ー→よい
おもしろい
たのしい
いそがしい
たいへん (tough, hard)
何をしましたか=What did you do?
何かしましたか? = Did you do something?
Try some answers using V-stem + に+ Motion Verb
"I went to ____ in order to _____."
Place へ Verb Stem + に + 行きました, e.g.
レストラン へ たべ に 行きました
To Library to read books/newspapers/magazines
To Cafe to drink Coffee/Tea/Latte/Chai
To Lancaster Mall to see a movie
To Friend's House to "Play" with Friends
(あそびます)
To the Gym to Swim (およぎます)
To the Library to study
To a Friend's Room to play (します) Games
Look at Activity 2 (p. 226)--combine to make one sentence using V-stem + に of purpose;
Also, Revisit Act. 1 (225) converting Suzuki-san's actions to
V-stem + に + 行きました
See Handout, too
I. Review Grammar Point II:
い-Adjectives: Remove final い and add + かった
Perhaps it is because we CAN inflect い-Adjectives into Negative (く+ありません/ない) and into the past, that we have to express the past of Adjectives using かった instead of Adj でした.
So, we never say 新しい + でした;
it must be 新し+かった です
A few examples:
高い 高 + かった
大きい 大き + かった
小さい 小さ + かった
うれしい うれし + かった (was happy)
Here is another great reason to make a List of all of our い-Adjectives and practice saying just the Base (i.e., the Adjective without the final い) in order to get used to making that sound
高
古
新し
おもしろ
あかる
ひろ
せま
つまらな
Then you can add
く ない (neg)
かった (past)
くて (て form - See Grammar IV p. 234)
to that base so these words come smoothly and naturally to you.
Of course, いい is always our exception, right?
いいーーー>よい Drop い
よ + かった = It was good!
You will probably use that alot!
週末は どうでしたか? How was your weekend?
よかったです! = It was fine/great!
For な-Adjectives, since we cannot DO anything to them, we CANNOT inflect them, we just ADD the past of です、i.e., でした to the な-Adjectives. e.g.
しずか = しずか でした;
大へん =大へん でした
So, when asked どうでしたか How was it? and the answer is, "It was lively!" You would say,
にぎやか (lively)+でした = it was lively
しずか + でした = it was quiet
ひま + でした =I was free/had free time
Back to taking the BASE of Adjectives and adding -かった you may want to get used to saying just the base of Adjectives: (i.e., remove the final い)
新し + かった
古
あかる
くら

How about the negative past of an い-Adjective? Two options:
Adj-く ありませんでした/or なかった です
どうでしたか
あまり おもしろく ありませんでした
あまり おもしろく なかった です
あまり むずかしく ありません でした

How do we make て Forms of Verbs?
Grammar IV L6 V-て forms
Two Verb types:
1. る-Verbs
This category is Easy. Stable, predictable.
Just take V-Stem (the pre-ます form) and add + て
V-て (V-て下さい)---->た
食べます---> 食べて -----------> 食べた
見ます-----> 見て -------------> 見た
出かけます----> 出かけて ----------->出かけた
起きます----> 起きて-----------> 起きた
2. う-verbs
This category is more heterogeneous, less predictable.
There are actually 5-7 "sub-groups" or families of verbs which share or are grouped around a consonant sound . e.g.,
S, K, (g) R, I, Tsu, M (b) N
(also 行きます = Exception Vって
行って 行って下さい= -----------> 行った
For most of the う-verbs, pay attention to the type of consonant that comes before the ます; each of these is a "line" in the Hiragana table.
e.g.
S 話します --->話して -----------> 話した
So we are "changing" along the "S" line in the Hiragana Table. So we can have the 話す form,
話さ(ない)、話して, etc.
出す-----------> 出した
K 聞きますーー>聞いて - here we drop the "K" and add いて
書きます---> 書いて same drop K add いて
-----------> 書いた
はく = はいて to put on) shoes, jeans,
およぎます---> およいで - slight wrinkel here as "g" sound gopes to a "g" = K = " き ぎ
R 入ります--> 入 って replace on the "R" line with a double "t" 入った
帰ります--->帰って-----------> 帰った
あります---> あって----------->あった
I いいます---> say いって - (言います 言って)
vowel sound also brings out a って 言った
会います---> 会って-----------> 会った
Tsu まちます---> まって----------->まった
M (b) 読みます---> 読んで----------->読んだ
飲みます ---> 飲んで----------->飲んだ
B よびます---> よんで= invite ------->よんだ
N しにます---> しんで = die----------->しんだ
Exception (noted above) 行きます ---> 行って
Irregular
します---> して-----------> した
来ます ---> 来て----------->来た
Adjective て forms Adjectives are NOTverbs so this is just review how we make them て and た
Adj. Base (remove final い) + くて And for the Past or た form, we just add かった
大き + くて-----------> 大きかった
小さ + くて -----------> 小さかった
古
あかる
くら
せま
ひろ
いそがし
おもしろ
むずかし
やさし
たのし
つまらな
さびし
In linking two Adjectives in くて form, we can link 2 attributes of things:
Big and expensive = 大きくて、高い です
Adj Base + くて
いそがし +くて、ひま じゃ なかったです。
高+くて、りっぱ です。
安+くて、いいです。
If it's a な-Adj or a noun, just use で
休みで、たのしかった です
しずかで、入りましょう
Also, Verbs て-form meaning "and"

I have something that I have to do

Here, we are seeing いい and わるい in their て form:
