4. Learning How to Introduce Yourself (Nakama, p. 7)
i. Hajimemashite. はじめまして = How do you do?
ii. (Your name) desu. X です。I'm _____.
(Note we never affix "-san" to our own name)
iii. Doozo yoroshiku. どうぞ よろしく.
Pleased to meet you.
5. Pronunciation Guide
The 5 Japanese vowel sounds are:
a "ah" as in father
i as in "ee"
u as in booo (but lips are pursed at the end)
e as in "eh"
o as in "oh"
So, the 5 basic vowel sounds of Japaense are very clear, very simple.
When we add a Consonant to these vowel sounds we get a "mora," so, for example, the next line in the Hiragana Table starts with a "K," so we go
K + A = KA--->and on down the line = KI, KU, KE, KO
H + A = HA which we see in "Hajimemashite," sounds like "Hah."
6. Unison Practice
i. HA--JI--ME--MA--SHI--TE
Breaking it down further:
--HAJI--->HAJIME--
--MASU
--HAJIMEMASU = HAJIME + MASU
--MASU---->MASHITE
HAJIME-MASHITE はじめまして
ii. YOUR NAME + DESU です
iii. DOOZO YOROSHIKU
NOTE: the "SHI" in words like -mashite and yoroshiku is a "whispered" sound. In other words, it is not enunciated like a strong "i" (ee) sound.
7. Practice with classmates!
