きょう は なんようび ですか?
きのうの ばん、なんじ に ねましたか?
Adjective Practice:
Affirmative and Negative forms of いAdjectives
〜い ですか = Is it____? e.g. Old, New, Big, Small, etc.
ふるい ですか = Is it old?
はい、 ふるい です Or,
いいえ ふるく ありません / ない です = No, it is not old. Or, with あまり(not very)
いいえ、あまり ふるく ありません / ない です = No, it is not very old.
Let's go through these:
Give the Japanese---->Then make a Question:
Is it....?--->Then answer in the positive and negative
Make いAdjectives:
tall, expensive ---> Is it____? はい/いいえ
old
new
big
small
blue
red
white
black
yellow
brown
good
But how about な-Adjectives?
These we cannot inflect with the -く ありません/ ない です pattern because な-Adjective do NOT inflect!
So...we have to add じゃ ありません or じゃ ない です to the な-Adjective. e.g.
りっぱ ですか?
いいえ、りっぱ じゃ ありません/ りっぱ じゃ ない です
pretty, clean
famous
spendid
Let's put the following expressions with a modifier IN FRONT OF THE NOUN** into Japanese:
old university ふるい 大学
small building
splendid hospital
new bank
big post office
famous teacher
pretty house
blue pen
red pencil
black book bag
white coat
good student
yellow dictionary
Now rephrase these as questions: Is it a....? And reply.
**NOTE if we are saying あたらしい たてもの = isn't the closest English equivalent "a new building"? Even if we add です to あたらしい たても
and say:
あたらしい たても
です aren't we still saying "It is a New Building" not "the Building is New." There is a slight difference.
How would we say "the Building is New"?
Hint: Start with たてもの
たてものは あたらしい です。
