Grammar I: この___、その___、あの___どの___

Adds to our KO, SO, A, DO List

But these words are different; they must be followed by a Noun so you are saying

This___, or That___

この本、その山、あの川, その人、あの学生、その先生

Other demonstratives like これ

=already contain a Noun so it can be used on its own and means

"This thing" これは_____です。

That's why we can never have これ本、それ山

And remember, これ、それ、あれ、どれ cannot be used for people so it will always be:

この人、その人、あの人

Likewise, ここ、そこ、あそこ、どこ= are about places; they already mean "this place, that place" as they are so we could NEVER have something like:

ここ カフェ or そこ 川 or そこ デパート

But rather it would be

その カフェ or その 川 or あのデパート

So,"this room" = この へや

"that picture" = その え

"that photograph" = その しゃしん

"that car over there" = あの くるま

It would seem that like これ、それ、あれ、

この_Noun_

その_N_、

あの_N__ are often です type sentences

その 学生は アメリカ人 です

この 先生 は いい先生 です

Though, of course, you could have

その 学生は いま としょかん に います

That studetn is in the library now

But it is also likely that with the location words in the Ko, So, A, Do family we may have a higher likelihood of seeing a verb of location/existence, like あります/います

そこに ぎんこうが あります

ここに あおい ペンがあります

But you could also have a です pattern with these words like ここ、そこ、あそこ such as:

そこ は いい ところ です = That is a good place.

ここは ひろい きょうしつ です = This is a big classroom

あそこ は ラムパブ です =

That place over there is the Ram Pub

So all these utterances are saying something about a place: This/That place is a good place....., spacious classroom, etc.

You try:

This university

wu

That professor huike

That Dog over there dog

This Cat cat

That Convenience Store kb

This Department Store dept

That Hospital hosp over there

This classroom: class

That Bike over there bike
