Grammar IV (275) Making Comparatives and Superlatives (いち番 = the best, the most..)
In English, we change the form of an Adjective like "pretty" into the "Prettiest," or Good into "the Best." In Japanese, we don't change the adjective but utilize a certain grammar or sentence structure based on いち番
1. The Superlative using 一(いち)番 (lit., #1, the best among 3 or more)
いち番 Something = the best, the oldest, the newest, the biggest, etc.
So いち番 must be followed by an Adjective or Adverb, e.g.,
一番 高い 大学 = the most expensive university
一番 古い 学校 = the oldest school
一番 いい先生 = the best Sensei
一番 いい 人 = the best person
一番 きれいな へや = the cleanest room
一番 好きな のみもの = (my) favorite drink
フォード ホールは (キャンパスの)いち番 新しい たてもの です。
その きょうしつは いち番 せまい きょうしつ です。
ロックが いち番 好き(な おんがぐ)です。
私の いち番好きな たべものは _____です。
You can introduce a category by saying
If the "category" is a Place, omit the の中で so just say.....
日本で、 いち 番 高い山は ふじ山です。
アメリカで いち番 大きい川は ミシシッピー川です。
日本で どの まちが いち番 大きいですか。
とうきょうが いち番 大きいです。
We can list up 3 things and say:
XとYとZ の中で
and ask どちら/どれが いち番 Adj ですか。高い,安い,大きい,小さい、おもしろい
What is
どちらが ? Remember Introducing someone こちらは 田中先生です = This person
So こちら comes from the Ko-So-A-Do family:
こちら、そちら、あちら、どちら; どちらcan be contracted to どっち
コーヒーと おちゃと ジュースと とっちが いち番 好きですか =
Which do you like best, Coffee or Juice?

2.
Comparatives in Japanese:
Comparing 2 Items
Here we use A の方が B より Something です
きょうと の 方が とうきょう より きれいです。
So より means "More than" what just came before より
Xは Yより _______ です。
As for X, More than Y it is____________.
にく より さかなの方が 好き です = More than Meat, I like Fish
Question:
Offering 2 alternatives with Aと Bと
Which is cheaper, Fish or meat?
さかなと にくと とちらの方が 安い ですか。
さかなの方が 安いです。
X と Y と どちら の 方 が 好きですか。
Which do you
prefer, X or Y?
どちら or どれ is the Question Word; they both are followed by が
Xの方が (Y より) 好きです。
I
prefer X (over Y).
Yの方が (X より) 好きです。
I
prefer Y (over X).
Breaking it down:
方 = means “side” or
alternative/choice; what comes just before
の方が
is what is preferred over the other alternative.
より= means “more than” the
item that precedes it
eg.,
More than X, I like Y = Xより Y の方が 好きです
Of course, we are not limited to NOUNS here.
We can compare ACTIONS by using VERBS in their Df+の:
本をよむのが、えいがをみるより 好きです。
I like reading books more than watching movies.
Asking the question, use Vdf+ の+と:
コーヒーをのむのと、おちゃをのむのと、どちらの方が好きですか。
With the Verb Pattern + 方, there is Nothing between Vdf+方
おちゃをのむ方が好きです
So with a Verb or い-Adj before 方 we just have nothing
Exmples:
Comparing the action of eating at Goudy v. at a Restaurant
ガウデイ で たべるのと、 レストランで たべるのと、どちらの方が好きですか。
レストランで たべる方が好きです。
Going to PDX v. Staying in Salem
ポートランドへ いくのと、セーラムに いるのと、どちらの方が好き ですか。
If you do not have a preference, or like both equally,
どちら+も=Both
どちらも 好きです。 I like them both.
Or,
Xも Yも 好き です。 I like both X and Y.
Or,
Xも Yも 好きじゃありません。
I don't like either X or Y
3.
More on より:
X は Y より Adjective
です
この本 は その本 より おもしろい です。
This book is
more interesting than that book.
The
その本より means
"More than that book…"
