日本語132 L10 Noun Modifying Clauses
Take these English Phrases and have them modify Nouns like, 人、学生、男の人、女の人、先生、etc.
あそこに いる学生 = The student who is over there; so in Japanese we are saying "The over there student."
So, pre-noun modification is really much more consistent in Japanese. To say new student, we say 新しい学生, the same word order as in English, i.e., the modification comes BEFORE THE NOUN, e.g.
BIG HOUSE, LITTLE DOG, etc. 大きい家、小さい いぬ
But to say," the student who is reading a book," we have placed the Modification AFTER THE NOUN; but in Japanese westill say, "the Reading a book Student" or 「本を読んでいる学生」
Likewise, the student who will go to Japan = 日本へ行く学生;in English, we can't say "The will go to Japan student;" we have to get convuluted and use words like who, that, which and make this part of the utterance come after the noun, not before or in front of it.
The textbook shows us this on p. 409 where it lists up all the pre-noun modifying patterns we have studied which consist of い-Adjectives, な-Adjectives, Nouns with の, etc.
In a word, Japanese is much more consistent and therefore, much cooler!! そうでしょうね?
