IDS 252: Topics for the Week of October 19, 2009

• Lab:

  • On Tuesday, review student work for Lab 7: Collaboration and Character .
  • Discuss and begin Lab 8: Animation Production. Note, there is no assignment on WISE. All instructions will be on this website. Please check the following places to find out what needs to be done:
    • The lecture notes as they are posted on the weekly schedule
    • The lab 8 instruction page, particularly the gantt chart
  • Starting next week, there will be one-on-one student-teacher meetings to review the first 7 labs and what your grade is in the class. This will occur on a first-come first-served basis during the lab time.

• Pixar parody

• Review what it means to give a story pitch (e.g. Shrek DVD)

• Story Development

  • Tuesday class

    • Finish going through Exercise 1 from last week.

    • Do Exercise 2. Questions for the critique:

      • What do you like about the story (be specific)? Does it keep you interested and engaged? Do you want to know "what happens"?
      • If you could change anything, what would it be?
      • Does it seem too long or too short?
      • How hard would it be to create characters and scenes that visually convey the story and emotions?
      • How does the pacing and tension vary over the one minute?

  • Tuesday lab

    • Develop first draft of stories
    • Tell stories to class for feedback and ideas.
    • Homework for Thursday: complete stories and/or revise based on feedback

  • Thursday class

    • Finish first/second draft of stories. Pitch stories and revise.
    • Create storyboards
      • Storyboards begin to develop visually the timing, camera and character action.
      • You should probably need only between 10-20 boards.
      • If you use pencil, you will need to go over them in darker ink before scanning them for the storyreel. Feel free to use color if you want.

  • Thursday lab

    • Finish storyboards
    • Pitch storyboards
    • StoryReels:
      • Go over how to create the storyreel.
      • Begin to develop storyreels from storyboards.
      • If time, pitch storyreels, revise based on feedback.
    • Homework for next Tuesday: Meet with partner(s) to finish storyreel. Be prepared to show in class on the following Tuesday.

  • Next Week:

    • Pitch storyreels, revise based on feedback.
    • Assign students to groups.
    • Groups will:
      • Put together task list
      • Refine storyreel. shot list
      • Collect reference
      • Set up Maya project folder.
      • Begin tasks.
