Lab 7: Final Project
CS 445: Computer Graphics, Fall 2014

Due Dates (Note the times - these are due BEFORE CLASS):

Part 1:	12:50pm,	Thursday, Nov 18 - Project idea (5 pts)
Part 2:	12:50pm,	Tuesday, Nov 25 - Intermediate Stage (5 pts)
Part 3:	12:50pm,	Thursday, Dec 4 - Project Presentations (5 pts)
	6:00pm,	Friday Dec 5 - Submit final documents on WISE (15 pts)

This lab is worth 3 times the normal weekly labs.

Goals

Implement an application that:
- Demonstrates your knowledge of most of the skills learned this semester. These include
  - modeling & scene graphs
  - viewing & navigation
  - lighting
  - shaders
  - textures
- And does at least one of the following
  - Expands on at one or more of the above skills.
  - Is an application that uses the above skills (but is different from what was done in any of the labs).
  - Explores and implements a topic in OpenGL that was not covered in labs (e.g. mipmapping, environment maps, fog, picking, stereo, shadows, etc)
You may work alone or with (at most) one other person. If you work with another, it is important that each part assigned to each partner is clearly identified and meets the goals above.

Examples

A 3D game, e.g. generate a maze that one nagivates through
A mathematical or scientific visualization.
For example, Molecular visualization: Protein molecule structures are stored in Protein Data Bank (pdb) files. See RCSB PDB. An example pdb file in ascii format is adrenaline, or download as zip: adrenaline (zip).
An educational program, e.g. that demonstrates a variety of OpenGL parameters, mathematical or 3D concepts.
Use a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) in some type of application, scientific visualization, or game.
Model a part of campus, e.g. a building or a room.
Create a set of tools for building geometry (e.g. to be used to create a building or city).
Create a tool for generating 3D L-Systems (e.g. for creating plant and tree structures).
Particle systems (this may be tricky with the new opengl, i.e. using transform buffers but there are sources that explain how to use particles to create smoke and fire).
An application that makes use of obj or ply files. C++ Code for obj and ply readers can be found online. Example models can be obtained as follows:
- Create your own obj models using Maya.
- The Stanford 3D Scanning Repository: ply models for the dragon, bunny, happy buddha, etc. Some of these are ascii and some are binary.
- Using noise algorithms to generate textures, e.g. wood grain, paint splatter, etc
Implement a Tesselation or Geometry shader (see textbook for how).
Implement a topic not covered in class: bump mapping, shadows, picking, cube maps, edge detection, etc (see textbook and other sources for how)

Deliverables:

Proposal - due Tues, Nov 18 before class: Write and submit to WISE a 1-2 page typewritten project proposal. The proposal should include:
1. Description: A paragraph describing the project. Be as specific and detailed as possible - one sentence is not adequate.
2. Skills: What openGL skills will you need for this project? Break it down by person if you are working with a partner.
3. Challenges: What do you anticipate as the most challenging aspect of this project?
4. Intermediate Stage: What will you have ready to demo on Tues, Nov 25 (Thanksgiving week). Break it down by person if you are working with a partner.
5. Final Project: What will you complete by the presentation on Thurs, Dec 4. Break it down by person if you are working with a partner.
6. References: This includes data sources, algorithms, documents/books, etc
In lab on Nov 18, meet with the instructor to go over the proposal before proceeding. It is recommended that you discuss ideas with the instructor before Nov 18.
Intermediate Stage - due Tues, Nov 25 (have demo ready to go before class): During class/lab, give a brief informal demonstration to the class of your Intermediate Stage. There is nothing to submit on WISE.
Completed Project - due Thurs, Dec 4 (have presentation and code ready to go before class): During class/lab, give a prepared 5-10 minute presentation (will depend on the number of projects) and demo of final project to class.
And, by 6pm, Friday, Dec 5, zip together the items below and submit as an attachment to WISE:
- A revised copy of your proposal.
- Any relevant data (or other) files.
- Your presentation slides.
- A few snapshots of the running code.
- Your final code. You should comment your code well enough so that another programmer can understand what it does. At the top of main.cpp, be sure to include:
  1. A paragraph clearly describing what your program does.
  2. The authors and date.
  3. If you are working with a partner, you should indicate what code each person wrote, e.g. by indicating the author at the file or method level depending on which is more appropriate.
  4. What data (or other) files are needed and, if relevant, the precise format of the data files.
  5. Brief instructions on how to run the code.
  6. If your code relies on keypresses or other user input, you should have these options printed out (e.g. to the console) when the program starts up.
If you worked with a partner, submit the above items on one partner's WISE site and on the other partner's WISE site write a note in the text area indicating the partner's name where the project files may be found.
