Voices from the Past consists of five finely crafted, lyrical novels that portray the inner lives of five extraordinary people: Sappho’s Journal (which includes a preface by Sappho scholar and translator Willis Barnstone), Christ’s Journal, Leonardo da Vinci’s Journal, Shakespeare’s Journal, and Lincoln’s Journal. For the most part, little is known about the inward realities of these fascinating people, about their personal thoughts, reflections, and the quality and nature of their feelings. In Voices from the Past, the author has sought to re-create the personal worlds of each person based on extensive historical research, weaving into each novel excerpts from their writings and/or the testimony of others. Each novel can be read independently of the others, and each is beautifully written and delightfully illustrated with numerous pen-and-ink illustrations by the author, who is also a widely recognized artist. Each novel appears in its entirety within a single unique volume 644 pages.

About the Author

Paul Alexander Bartlett is known for his published fiction (e.g., When the Owl Cries, a historical novel that takes place during the Mexican Revolution, freely downloadable from Project Gutenberg) and non-fiction (e.g., The Haciendas of Mexico: An Artist’s Record). His writing has been commended by many leading authors and critics, among them James Michener, Pearl Buck, Ford Madox Ford, John Dos Passos, Grace Flandrau, Sinclair Lewis, and many others. Voices from the Past was written by Paul Alexander Bartlett over a period of several decades. After his death in an automobile accident in 1990, the manuscripts of the five novels were discovered among his as yet unpublished papers. He had been at work adding the finishing touches to the manuscripts. His son Steven edited and brought the work to publication.
